Text: The Externsteine are a sandstone rock formation located in the Teutoburg Forest, north west of Germany. These rocks struck me as they stood tall, forming a family portrait. Bearing the passage of time and history they lean on each other tenderly.
I created photogravures of my family album, from 1950s urban Iraq, which became the landscape where the Externsteine now hover over, standing in for the figures in my family portraits. The shadows they cast on the photographs allow me to explore the space between these two histories as they coalesce.
